Advanced Assessment

What is GaitScan?

GaitScan is a computerised gait analysis system that captures detailed, real-time data about how your feet move and distribute pressure as you walk. Rather than relying on a visual assessment alone, it gives your podiatrist an objective, data-based picture of your unique walking pattern.

This information helps identify imbalances or abnormal pressure patterns that can contribute to foot, knee, hip or lower back pain — and forms the basis for precisely designed custom orthotics, where appropriate.

How It Works

A closer look at every step you take

You'll be asked to walk normally across a pressure-sensing plate. Hundreds of sensors capture how pressure moves through your foot with every step, frame by frame, which the software turns into a detailed visual map of your gait.

  • Quick, comfortable — you simply walk as normal
  • No needles, no radiation, completely non-invasive
  • Results are reviewed with you on the spot

Your Appointment

What to expect during your assessment

A GaitScan assessment is usually part of a broader biomechanical consultation. Your podiatrist will talk through your concerns, ask you to walk across the plate a few times, and then review the results with you — explaining what your gait pattern means and what it might indicate.

A GaitScan doesn't automatically mean you'll need orthotics — it's simply a tool to help your podiatrist understand your feet better and recommend the most appropriate next step.

  • A discussion of your concerns and history
  • A few normal walking passes across the plate
  • Your results explained in plain language
  • A tailored recommendation for next steps

The scan itself only takes a few minutes. It's usually included as part of a longer biomechanical consultation, where your podiatrist also discusses your history and reviews the results with you.
Not necessarily. A GaitScan is a diagnostic tool — your podiatrist will use the results to recommend whatever treatment is most appropriate, which may or may not include custom orthotics.
