Insoles and orthotics generally fall into three categories — prefabricated, semi-custom and custom — each built differently, priced differently, and suited to different needs.
There's no single "right" option for everyone. The best choice depends on what's causing your discomfort and how much correction your feet actually need.
Prefabricated insoles can be purchased over the counter at any shoe store or chemist. They come in different shapes, sizes, styles and materials, with varying levels of arch support.
It's worth noting that arch supports bought off the shelf aren't tailor-made to you — they're a generic, "one size fits all" device that may not be adequate for your needs. They're designed to accommodate different footwear and different foot pathologies in a general sense, not your specific feet.
A podiatrist can modify or improve a prefabricated device, and they typically last between 6 months and 2 years.
Semi-custom orthotics are one step up from prefabricated devices, and much closer to a true custom orthotic.
They're designed and manufactured at the same state-of-the-art laboratory in Melbourne, Victoria, using the same techniques and materials as custom devices — but without a cast or impression of your foot. Instead, a tracing of your foot is used, which reduces the cost involved, since the device is more generic than a fully custom one.

Custom orthotics are orthopaedic devices designed to treat or adjust various structural and functional biomechanical disorders affecting the lower limb.
They're an innersole device manufactured on a per-client basis, built entirely around your specific needs. Custom orthotics are the highest level of orthotics available and will usually achieve the best results — and can last up to 4 years.
